Mitchell DeJong Wins Silver Medal at X Games Los Angeles in Global Rallycross Lites

The action packed Global Rallycross (GRC) weekend at Irwindale Event Center hosted multiple days of sunny California skies and sold out crowds. Sunday’s GRC line-up started with the Global Rallycross Lites practice/seeding where Mitchell logged some fast lap times, but looking for more speed through the corners, Mitchell and Olsbergs MSE GRC Lites mechanic, Bjorn, tuned the front suspension of the #24 Red Bull GRC Lite for his Heat race. With the rapid fire schedule of GRC, Mitchell quickly found their adjustments paid off, as he drove the Red Bull/Horizon Hobby/Royal Purple dirt rocket to second place with the fastest lap time of both heats and advanced to the first ever X Games GRC Lites Final.

With an outside starting position for the Final, Mitchell knew he would need to get a great start to have a chance at a medal in the intense eight car field. As the green lights flashed Mitchell held his line wide around turns one and two putting himself into a great inside position for the hairpin turn three to takeover fourth position. By lap four, Mitchell had a great run out of the hairpin and opted for the shorter Joker Lap, available once per race, and slid the #24 Red Bull GRC Lite forward two positions into second place.

Mitchell raced as hard as he could chipping away at the large gap the leader had built while the others battled. Once Mitchell was in clean air, he shaved a second per lap until high engine temperature forced the #24 Olsbergs MSE powered car into cool-mode limiting the motors full rpm range. Mitchell maintained his composure and had enough power to retain second place for his very first X Games Silver Medal!

Mitchell commented, “It’s great. I’m just thankful to be able to race in (X Games). To be able to come out with a podium is so cool, and I can’t thank everyone enough for getting the car ready from Bristol. It was a tough track-it was a little wet, which made it extra challenging. I just did my best, tried to stay smooth and stay off the walls, and it seemed to work. It was a lot of fun, the car was great, and I can’t complain about it at all. It was cool! Special thanks to Red Bull, Olsbergs MSE, Horizon Hobby, Royal Purple, Powertank, 4130 Clothing, Dirty M3dia, Simpson Racing and K&N.  It was also cool to have Loan Mart join us at X Games, such a great group.”
Mitchell now heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway this Saturday, August 10 for Round 4 of the Global Rallycross Lites series.
